About Me

KEYBOARDIST/ COMPOSER Alan Jay Palmer was THE pianist with Jackie McLean during the last years of the icon's life. Born in Washington D.C. , Bad Alan Palmer as dubbed by Jackie McLean, studied piano, composition, and orchestration with Jaki Byard, John Malachi, and Hotep Galeta. Upon graduating from the Hartt School of Music, Alan joined Jackie McLean in the 90's recording his first album "Rhythm of the Earth" followed by "Fire and Love". Alan went on to join Roy Hargrove's Quintet and also became music director for Common. He also formed the group THE NEW SOIL. Alan Jay Palmer is a dedicated Jazz Educator with a great knowledge of the History of American Music. Currently living in New York City where he composes, performs, and teaches. Recent projects include performing with Amiri Baraka/Rene McLean, acting in the Connection with Judith Malina, a new Trio and New Soil record and a book on Jazz Piano Systems.
