katalize announces debut release
TRIBE: Journey Through The Spirit
Rare Collaboration delivers compelling musical expression of the Native American experience for the masses
Featuring: R.Carlos Nakai, Philippe Saisse, Joe Satriani, and many more
katalize is the creation of Grammy Winning and Oscar Nominated music producer and record executive Tony McAnany (Chant, Vision, Missy Elliott, POD, Remains Of the Day). An on going series of musical collaborations featuring the world's most unique and visionary talents set loose to explore the very boundaries of creativity. Where progressive sounds, beats that move, music with roots, and stories that inspire are discovered and shared with the world.
The name, katalize (pronounced cattle-eyes) represents a fusion of the term katal (unit for measuring catalytic activity) and process of catalysis (the acceleration of the reaction rate of a reaction by means of a substance, called a catalyst). In this case music and visionary talents.
The first album by katalize:TRIBE: Journey Through The Spirit, conceived by McAnany and long time friend and colleague Philippe Saisse fuses the authentic performances of the best Native American artists with Saisse' tasteful, emotional, and sensual arrangements. What began as a simple conversation has become possibly the most compelling commercial musical expression of the Native American experience ever made available for the masses.
"The Native American history provides the world with a poignant metaphor for the walk of life. Where every culture and individual on the planet must persevere and "believe" no matter what the obstacle," comments McAnany
With the guidance of Robert Doyle, album consultant, Saisse and McAnany were able explore the native community from the inside. "We spent some three months traveling back and forth to the four corners region - getting to see the reservations, meet the people of the tribes, learn their history from their point of view, hear of their legends, share in their despair and joys, and even join in their most sacred ceremonies - it was life changing." commented McAnany.
The Music
Philippe Saisse' thoughts about Tribe: The project Tribe for me represents a long time childhood dream of mine to connect with the American Indian culture which every French child of my generation has fantasized about. I got to experience first hand its tradition and culture by one of its prominent creative force, R. Carlos Nakai. Our initiation could not have been more genuine and our appreciation deeper. This collaboration remains one of my most treasured achievements.
The sensually spiritual pulse of the album is the perfect music to share with others. The calming sound of the Native American wood flute coupled with the vocal chants sets the tone as the underground world beats provide the groove. The album is accented by the powerful and raw Pow Wow drum beats.
The overall experience that Tribe delivers is the result of its unique blend of artists and creative collaborators from various genres: Pop, New Jazz, Rock, Alternative, World, Hip Hop and authentic Native American. A true musical experience.
Song Highlights
" Walk of Tears" features R.Carlos Nakai on Native Flute. The song metaphorically details in music the heartbreak and strength of the Native Americans as they struggled to protect and maintain their culture. The contrast between the modern drum and arrangements with the organic and mystical sound of the Native American wood flute is handled with finesse and great taste. The chorus features the chanting vocals of Verdell and Primeaux, Native American roadmen (traveling religious figures). This first single of the album highlights the emotion and spirit that eminates from the album as a whole.
"Arikara" cries out with the power of the Native Warrior. The song features a guest appearance by guitar great Joe Satriani, whose melodic solo combines perfectly with the Pow Wow Drum (Singers and special drum). Also featured are the once outlawed Eagle bone flute performed by R. Carlos Nakai. The intensity, tempo, live drums and vocal nuances throughout the track provide a musical view into the heart of the Native American fathers, brothers, and sons.
" I have been involved with many hit records, from the Fugees to Billy Joel, but I can say that Tribe is the single most important album to me of all those records. I am just so proud to have been able to be apart of such a great album."
Joe Nicolo
Tribe features guest appearances by some of the world's finest music innovators from every genre of music, Philippe Saisse, Joe Satriani, Mark Egan (Joan Osbourne), Glen Velez (Pat Metheny, Suzanna Vega), Joe Nicolo (Billy Joel, Fugees, Will Smith), Andres La Prida (Michael Brecker, Gato Barbieri), Ayumi "Obi" Obita.
Featured native performances by R. Carlos Nakai (leading native artist with over 2 million albums sold), Ed Lee Natay, Bala Sinem Choir, Robert Tree Cody, Black Lodge Singers, Northern Cree Pow Wow, Verdell and Primeaux, Shawnee Stomp Dance, Kelvin Bizahaloni, Shawnee Stomp Dance, and more.
The album will hit the streets on October 3, 2006 and can be found in the Pop/New Age/World sections of music stores. The album is perfect for anyone who bought and loves Art of Noise, Deep Forest, Enigma, Buena Vista Social Club, Groove Armada, R.Carlos Nakai, and Philippe Saisse.
If the album can be heard, people will love it. We are going to push the envelope on all the grass roots internet marketing opportunities. Competing for space against Justin Timberlake and Beyonce in stores is difficult. We have a big record for music lovers driven by a small committed machine. Hopefully, like Chant: The Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, people will discover the music and embrace it, and support it with a purchase. Music for the sake of the music. Music for the sake of the listener's experience. Music that means something, maybe something new that was something old." commented McAnany.
