About Me

Alto/tenor saxophonist/composer Noah Bernstein hails from Vermont, where he began the serious study of jazz saxophone with Lee Gillies and Andrew Miskavage. After graduating high school, he took a year off to explore some of the outer-reaches of the idiom and develop his sound with numerous groups including Tala, Red Quartet, and Incremental Balance.
He went on to study at Oberlin College & Conservatory in Ohio, where he graduated in '06 with a BM in jazz saxophone performance and a BA in creative writing. While there, he studied saxophone under Gary Bartz and Paul Coen, and composition/arranging with Donald Byrd and Wendell Logan.
Upon graduation, Bernstein petitioned The Feve Bar in Oberlin for a live music night and formed yelnaHquartet, who kept residency there for over a year every Sunday night. These evenings still remain in the hands of the quartet's guitarist, Rafiq Bhatia, who continues the legacy to this day.
Bernstein is now residing in Portland, Oregon, where he teaches, plays, and writes as much as possible. He currently runs a jazz jam every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at the Camellia Lounge on NW 11th & Glisan. He has also had the honor and pleasure of playing some of Portland's finest venues, including Jimmy Mak's, Rose Garden, North West Children's Theater, and the Jade Lounge.
