the international sign for 'slow down'

even though blackmilk have already come and gone, leaving a rather sad hole in our musical landscape, their recording 'the summer eye' remains with us as one of the most fetching post-rock albums to have come out of south africa's undergrowth. for three years, cape town quartet blackmilk wrote, recorded and performed structurally elusive avant pop at its best: intricate, intelligent, and infectious. their skew arrangements, off-centre harmonies, and intoxicated drum and bass rhythms interspersed with just a little bit of fuzzbox, loudhailer and arcade trash secured them an almost cult following wherever and whenever they performed. while their ability to mutate between slacker folk, post-rock, quirky pop, and improvised shoegazer drone saw them tour the country and play with some of south africa's finest. they appeared at the 1999, 2000 and 2001 oppikoppi festivals; toured nationally with the springbok nude girls and supported other high profile bands such as boo!, sugardrive and fetish. operating out of their own sui studios in cape town, the band first released a (limited edition) ep - 'goodbye satellite' before the full length 'the summer eye'. a posthumous ep featuring the previously unreleased song 'kimono dragon' with it's own music video has also now seen the light of day.ian watson (guitar, keys, vocals)
