About Me

Philosophy :
In a time when it appears that there is nothing left undone in art, Mao Tongue Section strives to bring an eclectic, revolutionary formulation of instrumentation and style. Approaching musical composition in a similar fashion as the Bahai observe religion, MTS acknowledges all forms of sound as valid.
Pooling musical resources and knowledge, from bands, orchestras, and jazz clubs to basements, MTS possesses a truly encompassing technique and methodology. We put in years of study in conservatories, practice rooms, recording sessions, and at countless live performances to become the musicians we are today. MTS would like to thank all of the teachers that we have had in life, in one form or another. Without their instruction, we would only affect the façade of musicians.
Urban Chamber Music :
New York pianist, Martin Tobin, met classically trained violinist Chad Marks-Fife in 2002 while playing together in The Oregon Jazz Ensemble led by upright bassist Glen Moore. It was not until 2004 that the seedlings of combined genres began to form. As more influences and members joined the project MTS evolved its sound. Now, at our shows, the merging of virtuosic instrument playing in all styles, atypical hip-hop lyrics, undiscovered samples, and melodic singing is a reality.
Jeff 'Kranberry' Kranovich is recognized around Portland for his skill as a trombone player and teacher. It is less known that he also leads a secret life as a solid bass player who rocks crowds with the Mao Tongue Section. Tanner Spaulding, a.k.a. Cavitron, is a multi-instrumentalist who has been in numerous bands around the Northwest and Chicago area and is an integral part of MTS song production and creation. Shyla Ball 'Gingersnap' is a talented local singer whose soulful voice touches audiences with each performance. Last but not least are the drummers. They are the ones who really make the music groove and help the masses bop their heads and dance. MTS plays with James MacMillan, Sam Berrett, and Wyatt Stone depending on venue and occasion. Drumming and percussion is played unaccompanied and with electronics to provide our listeners with a tasty variety of sonic experiences.
