Kris Bowers, a native of Los Angeles, California, began studying piano privately at the age of nine. Although his early studies focused on the classical repertoire, Bowers soon found himself attracted to the sounds and feeling of Jazz. He then enrolled in both classical and jazz classes at the Colburn School for Performing Arts (LACHSA), where he remained until the end of high school. While at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Bowers received numerous awards, accreditations and scholarships. In 2006, he graduated from LACHSA and moved to New York to continue his studies at the Juilliard School.
Since his arrival in New York, Bowers has shared the stage and/or recorded with artists such as Terell Stafford, Mulgrew Miller, Terence Blanchard, Clarence Penn, Carl Allen, Ben Wolfe, Ron Blake, Rodney Jones, Benny Green, Bobby Watson, Kurt Elling, Duane Eubanks, EJ Strickland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith, and Ingrid Jensen to name a few. In Addition, Bowers has had the good fortune to perform for notable individuals like Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and President Barack Obama. Kris is currently a Bachelor of Music student at The Juilliard School where he has studied privately with Eric Reed, Frank Kimbrough, and Kenny Barron. He will be graduating in May 2010.
Aside from playing, Bowers is constantly finding new directions to take his own compositions. “There are far too many brilliant composers and musicians in all genres to remain closed-minded,†Bowers says, “I refuse to filter the artists that inspire me whether it be jazz, classical, rap, hip-hop, rock, electronic, film, or whatever else I find myself listening to these days.†Bowers is currently forming his own band and hopes to debut a collection of his original music in the near future.
