Photo highlights from the Golden State Film Festival:
When it opened on August 6, 1926, the Golden State Theatre was the last word in movie presentation, "The Showplace of the Peninsula." Designed by the Reid Brothers and seating 1600 people, it was the largest theater between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
After suffering such indignities as losing its Wurlitzer pipe organ, the interior being spray-painted gray in the fifties and having its balcony divided for additional screens in the seventies, the theater is being brought back to its former glory.
Now, the balcony is once again part of the restored auditorium, the stage can be used for live performance and film, and the sound of the Mighty Wurlitzer is heard once again in Monterey's beautiful Golden State Theatre.
