Nancy Flood Interview
After a myriad of career paths, I found music late, writing my first song at 25. I was lucky that my first collaborator was Talk Talk's original keyboardist & co writer Simon Brenner who quickly took my writing skills up 10 notches as well as my confidence as a musician. Playing floorspots to a packed cavern @ the Troubador in Earls Court and places like the west end's 12 bar club soon made me realise i had a need to communicate with music.
After a music workshop tutors course at Goldsmith's College i put a band together and after a few line up changes, got the Camden circuit out of the way before going solo again despite some promising noises from labels. If you haven't got the right people around you it ain't gonna work.
Disillusioned, I began writing some new tunes and made a guitar & vocal demo that I passed onto a mate and John Leckie called me up after hearing it and told me my voice was 'a bit special'. Faith restored, i went out gigging again and Morcheeba's ex-manager approached me after a gig and we later struck a deal with Universal Island only for it to dissolve in an industry takeover. You soon get to realise there are more fences in this game than at Goodwood. Though it was very inspiring to record in their demo studios, especially as PJ Harvey had recorded in there. It was there too that i met Chris Bandy who had worked with The Cure for 6 mths and he was brought in on the session. We continued to record together and set up a studio in Marylebone, which was once made into the 1st Indian Ashram in London in the 50's and had been used for meditations ever since. It was very vibey and we did it up with persian rugs and weird lamps. One day we auditioned 9 drummers and had them playing Eastenders dum dums by the end of it. KT Tunstall also came down at one point, way before she made it.
The sea beckoned to me and I now live on the south downs and teach singing and guitar, mainly to kids.
Out of just over 250 tunes i am currently putting my debut- been- along- time- comin' album together, which will be self released & produced. A mixture of band and acoustic tracks that will hopefully summise this long and winding journey to date. If you got this far, thanks for reading...
