Pat Buchanan was born in Washington, D.C., one of nine children born to William Baldwin Buchanan and his wife Catherine Elizabeth Crum. (One of his sisters is former U.S. Treasurer Bay Buchanan.) Buchanan is married to Shelley Buchanan and is a practicing Roman Catholic. He is one-half German, one-quarter Scots Irish, and one-quarter Irish. He was educated in Roman Catholic Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. and Georgetown University, where he graduated with degrees in English and Philosophy in 1961.
