Play Set: Café au Lait - Latin Fever!
A-tek his intrests started at the age of 12, when he and his older brother (Toby) experienced electronic music for the first time. Their intrests became so strong that they decided to buy cd players and a simple mixer to mix their intrests to one part. As trying to mix different styles they discovered the sound of techno wich cast a spell on them. After a while they understood the picture that pitchless cd-players didn't match to their belongings, so they bought turntables instead, wich was a great relief. Together with close friend Nilz they started to buy and mix techno records. After a few years of experimenting with the turntables they were asked to play at some local gigs around their hometown Avelgem and in local club Ibiza. As longer they played, they improved their mixing and turntable skilz and were more asked to play.
As they improved in mixing they decided to organise an event to provide their hometown with techno music. The brothers and some friends started the Detroit Violence concept, wich has developed in three years time a well known standard in the wide area as they switch their location sometimes in Gent's famous club Decadance. They had already booked well kown and respected djz like Oliver Ho, Steve Rachmad, James Ruskin, Jamie Bissmire, dj Godfather, Jay Denham, dj 3000, Reeko, Stanny Fransen, ... . Their concept is also to give young talents the chance to play along side those giants.
Next to techno music they had a second love and that was the warm and happy sounds of House music. It was Toby that switched his path and set course for those housy tunes. A-tek liked the music a lot and followed his brother so they created a new alternative called Café au lait. As Toby with his new name Kinyatta got more focussed on house, A-tek aka 'n Kashama didn't give the techno sound up. If they play together they bring from deep jazzy house to uplifting latin-house with always a marker of quality in their musical choice.
With new musical intrests their should be a new concept they said, so they organise the Need House? parties in Avelgem. If possible they organise Detroit Violence with a second room, a house room to reach out and provide the peepz with more quality music.
The brothers have also created together with a friend the Lucidity festival concept. It has the same intrests and provides the same styles but outdoor instead. They threw their first one in the hot summer of 2004 and it was a succes. They managed to book Phuture 303 from the US as headliner and filled the line-up with local talents in techno and house.
Nowadays their intrests go even further as they started to experiment with drumcomputers, synths and samplers to satisfy their musical needs.
A-tek his intrest went even further as he and his friend Rakkalicious, a talented ragga dj, had the idea to mix ragga and house on four decks and two mixers. They were surprised by the results and preformed for the first time on Krak Rock in 2005 next to Black Chiney from Miami(US). Their still working on it but the strange thing is that it sounds quite all right and the party-heads on krak Rock enjoyed it. So watch out for some future mixes.
In the beginning of 2007, A-tek went 3 months abroad for his thesis and practical training. He went to Surinam, to develop and to build a working hydro-power station and he and his partner Willem, our percussionist, succeeded in their assignement. While he was there he went to several parties and clubs. With a couple of borgoe rum's in his stomach (and head), he took his chance to ask if they weren't intrested in a Belgian dj and the first preformance was booked. After he played, he was offered by the manager a residency during his 3 months stay.
After a couple of times playing @ club Starz, another organiser, Jorge, heard the warm and happy sounds of his typical house and booked him immediate for the Lustig Outdoor party (3000 peepz). A-tek and Jorge became good friends and more bookings followed. He played on one of the exclusivest parties in Surinam in the most coolest club/restaurant called Havana Lounge.
In Surinam there was only one place were A-tek could relax of his caipirinha and enjoy the deephouse and lounge tunes played at the Zanzibar. A cool outdoor cocktail bar with the finest musical choice in Surinam. He and Patrick, the manager, got along pretty well and he played also there.
For him Surinam is a great country were he lost his heart. Beautifull people, idyllic landscapes, hudge rain forest, ... great parties.
