A knight in shinning armor. But what makes a knight's armor shine? If he is a humble knight, he acknowledges that he is a sinner in need of God's grace through Jesus Christ. The ancient knight knew that even if his steel armor might shine, his righteousness was dull and lack luster, in fact "all our righteous deeds are as filthy garments." Even the very best thing a knight does, he knows is tainted with his sin and is only counted as anything of value by God's grace through Jesus Christ. Instead the knight looks to the breastplate of righteousness provided by His King and Lord (Ephesians 6 in the Bible described this spiritual armor for him). The knight puts on through faith the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the Second Adam, the Perfect man. Pledged to humility, he fights against evil first in himself and only secondarily in the world. The heavenly armor maker provides this gracious spiritual armor free of charge to one and all who receive Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior and King through humble faith that acknowledges our need to have Him suffer and die for us and live that perfect life we have failed to live.
The helmet is called the helmet of salvation in Ephesians 6. To know you have salvation from your own sin protects your head/mind against the foolish ideas that can otherwise take root. When you know you have been saved through the willing and loving death on your behalf of the Prince of Peace, your mind is filled with peace and you are no longer trying to win the favor your Creator, since He Himself came to earth to win your salvation for you. Now your mind is protected against the idea of "doing good" to get the approval of your Maker. Instead, your mind is filled with the thought "how can I show my gratitude to Him?" and your good deeds are inspired by His love.
The weapon provided by the Heavenly armor maker is the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures. In the pommel of the knights sword he placed the words of Ephesians 6 to remind him that the Word of God was sharper and more powerful than his two edged sword.
