I'm a young 20-something nearing the end of her Bachelor of Biomedical Science, who was freaking out about entering research but now loves the idea thanks to a mini-project last semester. Fell in love with genetics (if you can fall in love with a scientific discipline) when I was 14. Biology as a whole interests me--although physiology is a bit harder for me to get into...I'm also a muso--I love singing and performing. I have studied properly singing, piano and the clarinet, and can play a little guitar, drums and bass, but nothing to sneeze at.
I also write songs, been doing so since I was a kid, but seriously since I was about 15. I write all genres, interestingly...I've written Evanescence-style stuff and r'n'b and everything in between. Dunno if that's a good thing or bad thing, coz it means I'm versatile but perhaps have no unique style?I'm also wondering how a lifestyle of scientific research and creating and performing music is all gonna fit together.
But thankfully I don't have to dot the I's and cross the T's, coz I have a close relationship with God and I know that I know that I know that He's there to look after me and guide me through anything. It's amazing--you get to know God, and even with all the tough stuff life just seems to get better and better, somehow more full of life and light as you go.I've also been travelling a little. Been to Perth twice--love it. Been to Adelaide and Sydney but went there for conferences so didn't get to see much. And I've also been to China!I went to Guangdong province, which is where the city of Guangzhou (Canton as it's known to most people) is. We went on cultural exchange, and benevolence sort of stuff. We visited two TAFEs (with thousands of live-in students) and performed for them, and they performed for us, and we did exchange-y activities like visit sights around their district, Panyu. Got to know some really special people. And then we went out to the poorer areas, and visited some struggling primary/middle schools and gave them books we fundraised for--11 boxes to one school and 18 to the other. We performed for them and vice versa, and getting to know those kids was just amazing. They were obviously only learning beginner English, and we only had a handful of Mandarin phrases. It's so cool when you learn to communicate through other ways and means than words. It's like your heart really comes alive, coz you really have to feel what the other person is saying. And it's cool to see how much joy a simple bag of blown-up balloons can give a bunch of kids.
