The Green Sea

About Me

MyGen Profile Generator The Green Sea began initially as a collaboration between Bernard P. Provencher LeVautour and Kate Kirby, who had worked together prior in the New Hampshire metal band Ashes of Frost . The initial idea was to play big, dark, performance-driven rock'n'roll, primarily because they thought that it would be perversely entertaining, as neither of them was really a fan of that sort of music. By the time that Kate had to bow out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, Bernard was looking for other members, pitching the project as something like a cross between Bauhaus, My Dying Bride, and Motley Crue. Needless to say, once a lineup was reastablished after Kate's departure, The Green Sea sounded little if anything like any of these bands.

In the time that followed, The Green Sea has become principally a collaboration between the primary songwriters for two Phoenix-based electronic projects, Bernard LeVautour's LeVautourEnsemble and Wes Hopeless' Entropy 33 . Bernard and Wes had met in a writing class and had spoken of collaborating musically, so when The Green Sea formed Wes was approached to come on board as drummer. With Kate's departure, the traditional roles of instrumentation became considerably blurred as the group that was now again a duo sought to adjust the songs and fill the sonic gaps. The structure of the band became extremely freeform, and it was soon very obvious that The Green Sea was not going to be the perversely simplistic dark rock band initially intended.

Bernard, Wes, and their eccentric circus of collaborators and dabblers utilize whatever instruments, machines, junk, or noisemakers required to construct the sounds that they seek, no matter how unorthodox or incorrect. The sound has shifted many times in the course of their attempt to deconstruct and redefine the definition of a "song." The primary (and only) goal of The Green Sea is to capture in sound a pervading tone of snooty surrealism.

The name "The Green Sea" was taken from the title of a poem written by Bernard P. Provencher LeVautour, who is primarily a writer and Literary scholar, after awaking from a disturbingly vivid absinthe-fueled dream.

He actively blogs at LeVautourChronique .
