79'76 = Artech & Shawn Rubens = 79'76
Artech & Shawn Rubens aka 79'76 live @ Lowlands Festival 2006
Artech's bio:
Many people had forgotten about "Comfortably Numb" from Pink Floyd by the time that I first heard it in 1992, it simply changed my life. Born in Iran, a country where western music is considered evil I always found writing to be the window to my soul. That was all about to change.
I started playing acoustic guitar and later electric after moving to Holland in 1996, grew my hair, played in the bands....rock'n'roll you know. Electronic music caught my attention in early 1999 while producing tracks and soundscapes for a play, it was about the same time that I got interested in dance music and very soon into Techno. I bought a Roland MC-505, Protools and a Mac and started experimenting with sounds. Very soon, DJ-ing became the main interest since I wanted to play the music that I liked, the way I liked it. So I started listening to thousands of DJ-sets and practiced with a musicians dicipline. On top of that, I started a sound engineering study, for which I graduated in 2003. Since then, I have been working as a sound engineer on many locations and projects. Highlight: recording and producing Berry Visser's album "When Silence Sings A Song" with artists like Solomon Burke.
I performed at some of the bigger festivals (Lowlands 2003, '04, and '05, Mysteryland 2004, Dance Valley 2006), a number of smaller gigs and my own parties called Techno Republic.
Shawn Rubens bio:
On the 19th of January 1979, Ruben Overdulve a.k.a. Shawn Rubens was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
In 1994, Shawn Rubens bought his first turntables at the age of 15 and started buying records. At that time, he was influenced by the local Rotterdam radio-station that broadcasted shows like "Turbulentie" and "Hardcore Power". He practiced a lot in his small room, which really drove his parents and the neighbours crazy. Then, some day in November 1995, his friends took him to a Graveyard Rave party in Pompeii, a small local club in Rotterdam, later called Roadhouz. There he witnessed the DJ's, the loud sounds and the atmosphere and decided to ask the manager if he could play his records there sometimes. And so he did the week after. His try-out was a success and he became a resident for about two years, playing his sets each Friday and Saturday. In these years, he developed his skills.
In 1998, at the age of 18, Shawn Rubens heard a record from Oscar Mulero called "Lost" on Kobayashi Recordings, and he fell in love with Techno. The large amount of energy and the deeper sounds hooked him up. At that time, styles changed and Roadhouz closed it's doors. Shawn felt it was time for a change. Some difficult years followed, but Shawn never quit, playing his sets whenever possible at different clubs like the Rockefeller in Oss, but mostly at private party's and some illegal ones.
In 2003, on the 15th of March, Shawn played a very energetic set at the Teqnology talent stage in the Heineken Music Hall, using his a.k.a. NME. Since then, he has been performing at the Bootleg DJ-café and the Tejas Bar (5 hrs sets) in Rotterdam on several occasions.
2005 brought Shawn Rubens more events: Dance for Charity, two editions of Resistance, many 5 hour solo sets in the Tejas Bar and his collaboration with the Happy Avenue Crew, which continued up till today.
Where the hell did 79'76 come from?
In the end of 2005, Artech and Shawn Rubens met in Nighttown Rotterdam. They started a new collaboration, called 79'76, which represents their years of birth. Playing booming back to back sets with 3 decks and 2 laptops and 2 mixers, first performing at their new techno concept, called Beatmac, at that same Nighttown, in the Basement. It was a combination of art, music, and some of Artech's concepts such as "No cure no Pay!", "Telepropper", "VibeRater" etc... The well respected Dutch medium "3voor12" referred to Beatmac as a follow-up for the legendary "Future" parties of Michel de Hey in Nighttown 6 years earlier. Beatmac has unfortunately been forced on hold due to the bankruptcy of Nighttown. Nevertheless Beatmac will continue after things clear up there, or after another location has been found.
They have also performed at Dance Valley Festival 2006, rocking their stage on both nights. Also they will be performing at Lowlands 2006!
