About Me

The short version: Colonel Slim & the Happy Honkies play a blend of old-time country and honky tonk, with an occasional rockabilly flavor thrown in for kicks. Sets might include tunes by Hank Williams, Hank Thompson, Hank Snow, Buck Owens, George Jones, Merle Haggard, or Johnny Horton, to name just a few, as well as many great off-the-radar tunes in addition to a constantly growing list of original songs. We play a raw, energetic dose of soulful music presented with heart that will make you want to dance, or at the very least, will guarantee to get your toes tapping. We play most every Wednesday night at The Swing Station in Laporte, Colorado. ------------------------------------------------------------ -- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------ The longer version: To describe the Happy Honkies ya gotta take in the big picture of the personalities involved, and here it is: Colonel Slim & the Happy Honkies are shednecks. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------ What's a shedneck? Being a shedneck starts with a heart that beats to the rhythm of old time music, whether old country (ya know, like REAL country) or honky tonk or bluegrass or rockabilly. Being a shedneck, secondly, means liking to hang out in an old shed (of course) with equal parts scratchy old vinyl LPs, wood smoke from the cast iron stove, a fair dose of Early Times bourbon, cheap beer with a lime, and a whole bunch of great old tunes that gotta be kept alive. If you stir all that up, let it simmer for a long winter, you end up with some bonafide shednecks in the form of Colonel Slim and company. Regardless of professional experience or lack there of, and both extremes exist in our outfit, we shednecks feed off the knowledge that we are all on the same, old, dusty page with one another when it comes to the music we love. And that, friends, is what a shedneck is. And that's the spirit of the Happy Honkies. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------ These days, though, the shed is mostly empty and all the instruments reside at thebarand there's a fancy stage and all this high falutin' equipment and amps and monitors and sound boards and all that. So, it's a little bit more slick than it was back during the early days in the shed, but just a little bit. It's still raw, edgy, and real. The huge list of musical contributors in the form of Happy Honkies and Honorary Honkies that you can read about over there to the left is testimony to the fact that the shed spirit still drives the Colonel & Slim and all the permanent and guest Honkies alike. So if you think you might have that shedneck calling in ya, if you love old time music, or just enjoy any music as long as it's put forth with spirit, then come on in and join us. ____________________________________________________________ CricketSoda Myspace Editor
