Lady Posh is the hottest female dancehall artist to emerge from Jamaica since
Cecile and Tanya Stephens, but has a unique style that bears no comparison to
either. Still only twenty five, Posh represents the future of dancehall music
with her youthful dynamism and heady, lyrical mix of culture, sex and
entertainment. Yet she is also an artist on a mission who’s unafraid to tackle
issues, and hopes to change people’s attitudes through her music.
Like so many musical greats, Posh started singing at her local church. This church however, was Seventh Day Adventist, and situated in Manchester, Jamaica. A little later, inspired by the likes of Beenie man, Elephant man and Lady Saw, she began writing lyrics for a friend - Posh being too shy to deejay them herself, even though she was already fluent at chatting in both hip hop and dancehall styles.
By the age of nineteen she’d found the courage to appear on a local talent show
called Star Night, performing her own lyrics. She also completed a move to
Kingston, It was there she met Danny English, who invited her to co-write the
song Hot Gal.
This is but one indication of the respect some of dancehall’s leading figures
had for her from early. She was then introduced to Omar McNaught of Vibes
Corner, producer of hit rhythms such as Silk and Gum, and the man who
orchestrated her debut single Deggae deggae after she’d moved to London in 2002.
Omar is one of those rare individuals who believes in nurturing and encouraging
young talent, and whilst grooming them for an international career. Posh’s rise
to fame has subsequently proven rapid, with US ragga/hip hop producer Salaam
Remi (of Kevin Lyttle, Nas, Eve and Shabba fame) masterminding I Got You - a
song he’s now so keen on, he wants to use it for a movie soundtrack.
Dancehall producer Richard Browne, aka Shams, has also produced her and so too
singer Bunny Brown, who took her to Studio One only weeks before its owner, the
legendary Coxsone Dodd, passed away last May.
In the meantime, Boy I Need You is hotter than pepper sauce and produced by King
Jammy’s son Christopher CJ’ James, who mixes Latin inflections with dancehall
beats to irresistible effect on ‘Sexy; Posh when she’s in this kind of mood,
whilst I Like Him is already receiving regular airplay on JA stations Irie FM,
Hot 102, RJR and Fame FM, and is another runaway bashment favourite.
;Jah
Snow Cone, creator of hit rhythm Rice and Peas, produced this track together
with the hardcore pair of Hype Up (counteracting Bounty Killer!) and Guava. And
also the hit remix with Ms Dynamite and Tubby T ‘Ready she Ready’ that created a
storm in the dancehall and also on the airwave.
All four serve as testament to this talented new artist, whose fast growing
reputation isn’t based on hype, but the manifestation of something altogether
fresh and different
