Who Are The Traveling Players?
The Traveling Players, based in the Twin Cities, began as an inspiration of some actors and artists from Augsburg College and Shakespeare & Company, a repertory outdoor summer theater in White Bear Lake. Our goal is to take a similar approach to Shakespeare, presenting a family-friendly production that does not exhaust attention spans. We present plays without an intermission in an outdoor setting and carefully cut them to run about an hour.
Shakespeare? Outdoors?!
We use an "original practice" approach to presentation, using minimal setting and often performing in the audience, allowing audience members to become involved with the production and decreasing the need for amplification. Our costumes, as in Shakespeare's time, are chosen by each individual actor to suit their character, with little regard to a specific time period. Nearly all roles are double cast, meaning the same actor will appear onstage a number of times in a variety of roles. Our style of presentation emulates that of Shakespeare's time as much as possible, and is also heavily influenced by the bare bones practices of Michelle Hensley's theater company, Ten Thousand Things, and the collaborative work of Theatre de la Jeune Lune.
