Chris Walls hunts down opponents
Chris Walls
By ROBERT ANDERSONSPORTS EDITORConway defensive end Chris Walls loves to hunt, and his favorite prey is opposing quarterbacks, ball carriers and receivers.Walls, who is blessed with exceptional speed and strength, is well on his way to setting a new record for sacks in a season after just missing the school standard of 11 by half a sack in 2005. Although he doesn’t make a tackle every play, Walls is always around the ball.“If you read your keys, you’ll always go to the ball,â€? he said. “Everything is organized. I just love hitting people. You can’t make too much contact in basketball because they’ll call a foul.â€?Conway Coach Chuck Jordan said the 17-year-old is one of the team’s defensive leaders.“Chrisâ&eur
o;™s motor is always running,â€? Jordan said. “Everyone we play will make a comment on the film about how number 38 is always around the ball. He loves the game and he plays hard. He’s a leader on defense by the way he plays the game.â€?Walls was the Tigers’ leading tackler in 2005 with 67 solo stops, 54 assists and 121 total tackles. He had 12 tackles for loss, 18 pressures, 10.5 sacks, seven passes broken up, one fumble caused and one fumble recovery.“Heâ€
™s been our leading tackler last year and this year,â€? Jordan said. “He’s aggressive.â€?Walls is a son of former Whittemore High School standout Samuel Walls, and the two often talk about who is the better athlete.“He still says he’s faster and stronger than me,â€? Walls said. The 6-feet, 2-inch, 200-pounder began his football career in the seventh grade at Conway Middle School. He has never lost sight of his goal to be a winner.“Iâ€&tr
ade;m not a legend, but I always get after it,â€? he said. “Ever since I started in middle school, I wanted to stand out.â€?Although he has turned in many solid performances throughout his career, the most memorable for Walls came in 2005 at Sumter when the Gamecocks drove inside the Conway-5 in the final seconds before he and his defensive teammates held on to preserve an important 18-14 victory.“I had two sacks on that drive,â€? he said. “When you get a sack, it makes you think you’ll do it again the next time. It makes it easier on me.â€?Walls is a competitor and especially enjoys road games and the opportunity to beat teams on their home field and quiet the opposing fans. For that reason, he wishes Marlboro County was still on the Conway schedule. Friday nights at The Backyard are also special.“The fans get you hyped up and ready to play,â€? he said. “All these people come to see you play. You have to be ready.â€?Walls believes the Tigers have the talent to win a region title and make a run for the state championship.“Our goal is to be a better team in the playoffs than we are now,â€? he said. “All the regular season games are helping us work toward the playoffs.â€?Walls is one of 26 seniors on the team and considers himself one of its leaders.“Even though I’m not a captain, I think everyone looks up to me as a leader,â€? he said. “I’m a guy who gives the team energy. The support I give and the way I play makes them feel better.â€?Walls hopes to end his career by playing in either the North-South All-Star Game or the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He also wants to play on the next level.“Iâ€&tra
de;m a smart student and I’m working hard to get my grades up, he said. “There ain’t no football without education. I’d love to play college ball. I’ve heard from Coastal and a few other schools. I’ll go anywhere if they want me.Walls also plans to play basketball and track this year. He played basketball as a freshman and sophomore, before competing in wrestling this past year.
