About Me

FIlmmaker by night, Illustrator by night, Writer by night, and mild-mannered, awkward skinny boy during the day, I basically make short films out of whatever materials I can harness. I've been credited as Writer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Sound Designer, Musician, and Actor in my own short films as well as others. If anyone is interested, my full resume is available upon request.
My films are now distributed on DVD!!! That's right, five of my horror films are collected in the anthology BENEATH THE FLESH. The DVD anthology is released by Pathfinder Pictures and will be available by May 26th. BENEATH THE FLESH includes ID, THE BASEMENT, THE CHILD, THE INSIDES and of course, BOXHEAD.
My newest film, BOXHEAD. Appearing at the New York City Horror Film Festival!!!
Here's what horror review and information website, "Quiet Earth" said about BOXHEAD...
"Mmm… BOXHEAD. I’m not sure if I just happened to be around a specific group of people at the festival, but this film seemed to have a little buzz going for it, and understandably so. Boxhead is the Kafka meets Lynch meets Burroughs (via Cronenberg) tale of a man tortured by his inability to embrace life by an oddly-domed “thing” in his apartment. The acting is swell, and the lighting…let’s just say, may all filmmakers have such control of heavy contrast B&W. The characters are of the highly stylized variety (hence the aforementioned patriarchs of the alien macabre) and lend the film a very nude-and-not-quite-grounded-dream-like quality. It’s quality stuff."

Here's what acclaimed writer Ron Sproat said about my early short film, ID...
"Eerie, compellingly suspenseful, darkly disturbing --- these are the words that come to mind in describing Randall Kaplan's short film 'Id.' The atmosphere of dread that suffuses the action is highly reminiscent of the Murnau of 'Nosferatu.' The choice of shots brings to mind the fluid work of Polanski as he roams the apartment of the insane murderess in 'Repulsion' and suggests horrors to come. Another dozen or so masters of this suspense/horror genre could be cited, but Mr. Kaplan has clearly studied them, absorbed them and developed a style uniquely his own. This is outstanding work, and I look forward to following the career of this highly talented film maker."
-Ron Sproat, Head Writer of the acclaimed television series, "Dark Shadows".

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Interesting and creative types of any and all sorts, people and companies interested in working with me.

Hey, like what you see? I made "Id" with virtually a non-budget, and continue to make films with budgets of a couple hundred bucks, but imagine what I could do with a REAL budget? Hmmm? You see, I have plenty of ideas for larger projects (i.e. FEATURES) but of course, absolutely no money to speak of. The ideas are getting bigger and bigger, and the funds smaller and smaller...but that's where YOU come in! Seriously, if you want to invest in a film, there's a good chance mine would be your future treasure-trove. Not to mention, you'd be supporting fresh, new talent! Anyway, just let me know. Also, if you want Illustrations, Storyboards, or other artsy-type things, I'm your man.
