ABOUT A BAND:
SOUPSHOP is not your average punk band.
SOUPSHOP isn’t anyone’s average punk band for that matter.
SOUPSHOP is FINEST SKUNK ROCK.
Once upon a time there were Dino (vox) and Jelio (guit / vox) and they happened to end up in a small, dingy, joint of a restaurant on the nice island of Crete. This place opened at 4 in the morning and the only item on the non-existent menu was greasy goat soup which was supposed to be the ultimate hangover cure. Well, the soup worked and after several heavy drinking binges which ended at this „Soupshop“, the name for the band was born.
Numerous drummers, bassists, guitarists and two studio records later, the band’s line-up was finally cemented in 2003: with Mini on saxophone, Urlaut on bass and Nino on drums. With these changes in line-up the sound of Soupshop also evolved continuously and turned from what used to be straight punk rock into something that the band themselves call SKUNK ROCK:
“A hot mixture of sweaty Ska, snotty Punk, a bit of Reggae and a big shot of Rock’n’Roll!” (NIGHTLINE magazine).
What followed was relentless touring (as of now the band has roughly 250 shows under their belt) along with exploding van engines (yup, I shit you not, the thing literally EXPLODED), smashed windshields thanks to rockfall, torn ligaments and countless nights in cold sleeping bags, hot girls and not completely wrecked hotel rooms.
After the addition of Alina (trombone) in 2006, SOUPSHOP once again headed to Berlin to record the follow-up full length to their TOX ON THE ROCKS EP (2005). This time they also threw a dash of Balkans flavor into the mix to add to their very own brew ranging from Ska over Punkrock to Rock’n’Roll and Reggae. This fine piece of art goes by the name of THE SKUNKSHOW and showcases mastermind Jelio’s songwriting skills at their peak to date. The other members also left their own mark in the songwriting process, ultimately yielding the band’s most balanced studio effort to date.
Well, the year is 2007, the album’s out on Tap Water Rec. / RADAR Music and even a video was shot for Soupshop’s tongue-in-cheek assault on the electronic music scene (“Drum’n’Bass Is Polluting The Air”). This video also sparked some heated discussions in a number of Internet forums and aired on European music television station GOTV.
