Favorite Places:
COFFEEHOUSE, BAR: Meet
Tryst, DC's answer to Central Perk! Tryst is located in the heart of the Adams-Morgan neighborhood of downtown DC and is the best all-around hangout in the city. Not only do the baristas serve up classic espresso concoctions in oversized mugs (finished with animal crackers), but the bartenders at Tryst are famous for shaking a mean martini, and the evening scene is always happening. The food is downtown-diner, with a few upscale touches to classic sandwiches and appetizers, and is served to you on comfy couches and chairs. Plenty of bar and table space is also available. Best of all, when Tryst finally closes, you can head over to The Diner, one of DC's few 24-hour food joints! Tryst Coffeehouse, Bar, and Lounge
DINING: While their virtual decade-long run in Washingtonian's 100 best has ended,
Addie's is still top-notch and deserves a little more recognition than it has recently received. Inconspicuously located in a charming, converted house off Rockville Pike, chef de cuisine Andre Cavallero's passion for cooking is certainly a world-class affair. The food may be described as Gulf Coast/Down South American-brasserie, and is often to the standards of fine-dining, although the atmosphere is comfortable, and jeans are never shunned at the door. Springtime offerings include organically-raised salmon in yellow saffron, pork belly risotto, smoked artichoke salad, and of course, the city's very best cornmeal-crusted oysters. Prices are moderate-expensive, but worth every foodie's penny. Addie's Restaurant
COFFEEHOUSE: ¡Que fresca! The folks at
Mayorga Coffee Roasters give a good, green answer to the homogenous coffeehouses across the nation. It's not Seattle, and it's not trendy, at least in a Soho kind of way. What it is - serious, small-batch coffee, which is roasted right in your own backyard! The coffee is sourced via Rainforest Alliance, fair-trade certified, and complies to organic certifications. It is then roasted in Rockville, and then enjoyed at the bright and roomy 6200-sq. ft downtown Silver Spring store (yes, "Spring" is supposed to be singular). This bold venture of Mayorga Coffee has provided the DC area with the freshest coffee bar none, and a very inviting new joint to enjoy it at. Mayorga Coffee Roasters
CLOTHIER: There are plenty of imitations, but
Universal Madness is the company that started it all. This is the last word in contemporary urban gear, showcasing the street's latest fashions in all shapes, sizes, and most definitely, colors! While they specialize in athletic apparel, their specialty is high-fashion embroidered jerseys, and often carry the hard-to-find box-collared ribbed tanks. Sorry, there is currently no website available for the Madness Store.
Universal Madness is located at 3120 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20010; (202) 829-3850
CLOTHIER: While not exclusive to Washington, it feels like it is;
Urban Outfitters has long been a Georgetown staple, and they have recently added a store in the Gallery Place/Chinatown district. Board shoes, designer denim, and other high-fashion articles for both sexes; graphic tees that are actually funny, drinking board games, all things Atari, all manner of contemporary apartment furnishing, other nostalgic knickknacks, and lots of retro-inspired tees, toys, and paraphernalia.
