Sounds Like: Cicca Roll, “digesting” ethnic music for Japanese tastes “Rearranging ethnic music from around the world with a Japanese flavor.” While emphasizing their Asian roots, Fukuoka-based street musicians CICCA ROLL have their sights set on the international scene. 【CICCA ROLL】 The key concepts of the band are “ethnic,magestic, soothing, and erotic” “We want to express the double-sided aspect of things, like strong and gentle, static and dynamic, and human and mechanic.” (Nohtomi) “I’d like our listeners to be able to ‘visualize’ our non-categorical music.” (Teshima)Ethnic music rearranged with a Japanese flavor “We’re trying to get to a point where anybody listening to our music would recognize it as a Ciccaroll song.”“We especially want to emphasize Asian music, but we don’t want to play straight ethnic music, because we’d never be better than the real thing. Whether it’s Indian music or southeast Asian music or Egyptian music, it’s important to take it in with Japanese sensitivity and add Ciccaroll’s flavor.” (Teshima) Impromptu performances by ethnic musicians Live performances emphasize visual and olfactory sensations as well as sound “For our performances, we spread carpets and sit on wooden chairs, and also burn incense, so you can enjoy the visuals and scent as well as the music.” (Fukuda) “We even have Indian dancers.
