Instrument: Satsuma Biwa - a traditional Japanese lute
Satusma Biwa is known as one of the traditional Japanese musical instrument. However, Satsuma Biwa shows itself at its best when it is played as a requiem for those who died in battle. The Satsuma Biwa accompanies epic stories (monogatari) such as the Heike Monogatari, as the musician chants a lively and soul-stirring music, while conveying the nature of Samurai.

Program- Saigo Takamori
Saigo Takamori lived during the revolutionary turmoil at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Meiji Restoration (depicted as one of the main characters in the movie, “Last Samuraiâ€). During this rapidly changing social situation he was beloved by the general public as a hero, and was one of the members who established the foundation of Modern Japan.
Although Saigo contributed to the progress of The Meiji Restoration as one of the iconic figures, he took on the responsibility for a rebellion caused by his disciples in the SEINAN WAR, the last great civil war in Japan. The younger warriors who were followers of Saigo put him on a pedestal and went on with the war. When he saw that there was no chance of winning during the last progress of the war, Saigo accepted his death and never blamed anyone else, even though he was not responsible for the start of the war.
He accepted the inevitable, and stood his ground.
The State army numbered around 50,000, against the Satsuma rebels’ 300 led by Saigo at the final stand at the Battle of Shiroyama. Although they fought for the preservation of the role of the samurai, they used Western military methods, guns and cannons. Most contemporary depictions of Saigo Takamori depict him garbed in a Western-style uniform. At the end of the conflict, running out of material and ammunition, they had to fall back to close-quarter tactics and the use of swords, bows and arrows.
Badly injured by a bullet in the hip during the battle, Saigo asked a comrade to cut off his head to preserve his honor, instead of being killed or captured by the enemy. Legend and art show that Saigo committed seppuku, a traditional form of suicide. His death brought the Satsuma Rebellion to an end.
The purpose of flowers to bloom is not so they fall. Know your life. Live out your allotted span of life without any delusion, and that is beauty.
I respect a way of life that Saigo Takamori has lived. In my mind he is prideful and strong, even while carrying a heart-wrenching sorrow, and yet straightforward.
