Growing up in small town in nothern Japan, koyu spend a lot of time listening contemporary music such as John Cage, Minao Shibata. He started playing the electric bass at age of 15 influenced by "8:30" (weather report).
After studying philosophy in Tohoku University in Sendai, he moved to Tokyo where he studied western harmony & music theory, changgo (korean percussion) and sitar.
He entered Berklee College of Music in Boston, US and learned Jazz and cuban music.
Two years later, he entered the master course (composition major) at American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
In Chicago he played Jazz & blues music with Jade Maze, Quintus McCormick, etc.
In 1998 he came back to Tokyo. he lead his own Jazz/fusion groups such as D-bop and Red Lotus.
He found singer/song-writer Ben Kemp (New Zealand) basking on the street in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo and produced his two albums.
