Financial Aid Awareness Day helps students manage money

Issue date: 4/28/08 Section: NewsMusical performers caught the attention of passing students in the quad during the Financial Aid Awareness Day, on Wednesday April 23.The event was hosted by the Financial Aid office in order to excite and inform the community about financial aid forms available to students in need.During the event, singers and rappers performed to attract passing students, who were also enticed with free pizza and soda, if they signed-in, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.About 60 people went through the financial aid tables picking up packets and receiving pizza for their efforts. Counselors stressed the fact that students are still eligible to turn in financial aid forms for the 2008 school year.One rapper Joseph Garcia, 25, who says his friends refer to him as "Joe Bleez", said that he usually stays behind the scenes producing and writing but hopped on stage and performed an exclusive rap he wrote himself about "stepping up your game" by getting financial aid."Music is my life. Without music, it's like being in jail for me", says Garcia.The lyrics of the song encouraged people not to be shy about picking up the financial aid packets. Garcia said that he hopes others will find their passion through education, as he did with music.His mother, Doreen Garcia, asked him to look through the pamphlets of what federal assistance is about and how to receive money. He wrote a whole song solely on these informational packets."I'm very proud of him", she boasted about her son after he performed.Forms and information are available in the financial aid office, Bldg. 5 rm. 217."Don't use your mamma's money. Don't use your daddy's money. There's plenty of money that the tax payers have," she said.
