And how many of us wanted desparately for someone to say the same to Nuriko? Alas, Nuriko died before finding his 'one true love,' but he did find a love of another kind through his friendships with Miaka and the rest of the shichiseishi. This page is dedicated to the four people Nuriko loved most of all...
Nuriko's view: Saihitei, the young Emperor of Konan and Suzaku Shichiseishi Hotohori, is the object of Nuriko's... er, obsession when we first meet him. Nuriko had been living at court as Lady Kourin and was bound and determined to win the emperor's heart, even if he had to go through Suzaku no Miko to get it. Even though he was living his sister's life, I truly believe Nuriko did have feelings for Hotohori. At the end, those feelings perhaps weren't as strong or as passionate, but they did exist. It wasn't about 'being gay' as Tamahome would put it. Nuriko was able to love indiscriminately, regardless of gender. Next to Miaka, Hotohori was the one Nuriko looked after and protected most.Hotohori's view: Alas, the Emperor only had eyes for Miaka (Hotohori no baka!). But he did consider Nuriko to be a close and trusted friend. When trouble befell the young ruler, Hotohori always turned to Nuriko for help (the incident at the bandits' stronghold had me rolling ^_^). But I also think Hotohori felt something for Nuriko as well. I don't think he would have married Houki if he hadn't. And of course, what gladdens my heart most is the image of Chibi-Nuriko and Chibi-Hotohori reincarnated together at the end of the story *sniff*
Nuriko's View: The young girl chosen to be Suzaku no Miko was at first an object standing in the way of Nuriko's love for the Emperor. But time passed, and their friendship changed from bitter rivals to close firends. Nuriko came to care for Miaka as a younger sister - even comparing her to Kourin at times. As Nuriko came to terms with Kourin's death, he gradually let go of his feelings for Hotohori and came to love Miaka as a man. Miaka touched a part of Nuriko's heart he hadn't known existed. But though he loved her, he wanted more than anyting to see her happy... and Tamahome made her happy. Nuriko was content to sit back and watch Miaka and Tamahome together.Miaka's view: Though Nuriko acted horribly to Miaka at the beginning, Miaka still tried to become 'her' friend. She knew if she is to succeed to calling Suzaku, she must get along with all her seishi. When she found out about Nuriko's little 'secret,' Miaka didn't seem to mind (much) that he was a man. She would have kept it for him if not for her evil double blurting out the truth. She looked up to him as a big brother, and almost went mad when he died. Nuriko's death hit her hardest of all, but even death could not stop Nuriko from protecting Miaka when she needed him most.
Nuriko's view: The first of the Suzaku Shichiseishi, Tamahome, was constantly on the run from Nuriko at the beginning. Nuriko persued Tamahome relentlessly in order to make Miaka jealous. But his heart remained with Hotohori. Over time, Nuriko and Tamahome became close friends, though their arguments seemed more like those of siblings than friends. ^_^ Nuriko constantly worried about Miaka and Tamahome's relationship and was always ready to lend an ear (and a Nuriko special) to the problem.Tamahome's view: Poor Tamahome suffered from Nuriko's 'affections' for the first few episodes. But gradually the two became trusted friends. Though Tamahome sometimes forgot and referred to Nuriko as a girl, at the end he came to look upon the older seishi as a brother: seeking advice from him, joking around, and leaving Miaka in his protection. When Nuriko died in his arms, Tamahome vowed that he would be happy with Miaka - just as he had promised him. *reaches for tissues*
Nuriko's view: Tasuki and Nuriko are by far my favourite pairing. The two quickly become freinds; Nuriko teaching the younger theif how to pick on poor Tamahome. ^_^;; Nuriko looked on Tasuki as another 'little brother,' each being able to give as good as he got when the two argued.Tasuki's view: I'm not sure what Tasuki felt when he first met Nuriko (ooo... fanfic idea!), but I do know that at some point along the way they became close. Perhaps it was because Nuriko was the first 'woman' Tasuki didn't feel threatened by. ^_^ Tasuki was the most vocal one at Nuriko's sudden death. He verbalized what my heart was screaming at that moment. The image of tears pouring down Tasuki's face when Nuriko died almost broke my heart. Tasuki admired greatly what Nuriko had sacrificed for the sake of those he loved...
