"Thacker Mountain Radio is the closest thing Mississippi has to the Grand Ole Opry."
- Charlie Worsham
Thacker Mountain Radio is a music and literature show broadcast every Thursday (in spring and fall) from Off Square Books , a bookstore located on the town square in Oxford, Mississippi.
The hour-long program features authors reading from their latest books as well as live music from artists famous and up and coming. (See books and music).
TMR takes it’s name from Oxford’s county fire tower and is broadcast statewide by Mississippi Public Broadcasting . The show won the 2005 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.
Rather than a slick production, TMR is decidedly down-home, with book shelves moved off to the side and wooden folding chairs set up for the (usually) over flow crowd. The store’s cat wanders the aisles while the unscripted, unrehearsed show unfolds.
In this age of cookie-cutter entertainment, TMR is a throwback to live radio performance but with a cutting edge. Each show is different and spontaneous and delivers solid entertainment worth every penny of the free admission.
